What goes wrong in the first week

Most people who start out streaming spend their first week doing the wrong work. They obsess over the profile photo and the username, then go live in a room where the overhead light throws a shadow across half their face, the mic picks up the fridge, and there is a piece of mail with their real address sitting in the corner of the frame.

None of that is a talent problem. It is a setup problem, and setup problems are fixable in an afternoon if somebody tells you what to actually check.

That is what this is. Seven days, one job per day, roughly thirty to sixty minutes each. By the end of it you have a room that looks good, sound that does not drive people away, a persona that is separated from your legal identity, and a written plan for your first session instead of a blank stare at the camera.

What is in it

  1. Decide your lines before anyone asks you to cross themYour persona, your name, your backstory, and a written list of what you will and will not do. Deciding this cold, in advance, is much easier than deciding it live with money on the table.
  2. Separate your identity from your workA dedicated email, a payment identity that is not your daily one, region blocking, search engine opt-out, and stripping location data from your photos. The full audit, in order, with the settings named.
  3. Audit what the camera can actually seeThe reverse image search on your own room, the mail and prescriptions and school lanyards people leave in frame, window reflections, and the wall behind you. This is the day most people find something.
  4. Fix your light with what you already ownWhy the ceiling light is your enemy, the two-lamp arrangement that fixes almost everything, and what to buy only after you have tried the free version.
  5. Fix your sound, which matters more than your cameraMic placement, the room noises you have stopped hearing, and the cheap fixes for echo that do not involve buying foam panels.
  6. Test your connection and your software before it mattersThe upload speed floor you actually need, how to test it properly, wired versus wireless, and a dry run with nobody watching.
  7. Write your profile and your first-hour planA profile that reads like a person, and a written plan for hour one so you are never sitting there wondering what to say next.
Day 2 and Day 3 are the ones people skip and later regret. If you only do two days out of the seven, do those two.
